06/11/2009

C.A.I. met St. Pius in Magherafelt in the U16 league for the first time since their titanic struggle in last year’s final which Inst won in a penalty shoot-out. The weather conditions were good but the sun was quite strong for this mid-day match. C.A.I. got into a rhythm quickly, producing several efforts at goal. Inst were awarded a penalty 10 minutes in due to a bad two footed tackle on Ryan Lee. Scott Clarke stood up to convert the penalty but unfortunately it was saved by the St. Pius goalkeeper, but not held, and Josh Murdock scored from the rebound. Gideon Cordner showed good skill down the left wing crossing in promising balls into the St. Pius penalty area. C.A.I. came into the 2nd half after an encouraging team talk from the manager. Chris Scott showed good skill down the right wing taking on players with ease after coming on for Ryan Lee. C.A.I. won a corner and Scott Clarke crossed the ball in for Gideon Cordner to head the ball into the net. Steven Coyles came on to replace Phillip Patterson and played wonderful through balls to the strikers. Inst had a few more chances but couldn’t add to their tally, the final score 2-0 to C.A.I. who had showed good passing ability throughout the game
