Inst went into this match as the underdogs and this instilled in the players the sense of commitment and work-rate needed to not be overwhelmed. As the first half developed Inst seem to move from a team initially content with defending competently to one also starting to probe the opposition defence. By the end of the half Inst had had most of the goal scoring opportunities, with Gary McKendry and Luke Bradley both having shots from about 25 yards out saved by the Craigavon goalie.
In the second half Inst came close to scoring early on, the closest being a Luke Bradley shot which hit the cross-bar. His brother Joel broke the deadlock shortly after when a header from captain Paul Milliken into the danger area was struck into the bottom left corner of the net. Craigavon immediately went on the offensive in search of an equaliser, getting their first corner of the match, but Inst weathered this storm and settled into a rhythm, playing very well as a team. Goalie Luke Forgrave had to make a number of saves in the remaining period. Gary McKendry and Scott Clark worked tirelessly in the middle of the park and this was rewarded when Scott Clark hit a direct free kick from 25 yards out into the top left corner to give Inst a 2-0 lead. Josh Murdoch came on for the injured Aaron McLean and Chris Scott came on for an exhausted Joel Bradley, who had given everything for the cause. His brother, Luke, made the victory look easy on paper when it had been very different in reality when he scored Inst’s third goal with ten minutes to go, a thunderbolt into the roof of the net after beating two men to settle the result in a match best remembered by Inst for their superb work-rate.
