Do you play a musical instrument, like to listen to music, have a desire to know more about music, and would like to compose your own music? If you have answered yes, then G.C.S.E. Music is for you!! I believe that if you can play an instrument, then why not get an accreditation for it?
Some who do G.C.S.E. Music have already decided to follow a career in music, and continue to AS, and A level music, and then on to Further Education. However for many, it is an extra subject which they have chosen to do, simply because they are interested in music, want to develop their playing ability, and want some recognition for doing so.
A G.C.S.E. qualification in music, is very useful for your Curriculum Vitae. Quite often in academic selection, your interests and qualifications outside of your chosen career path are scrutinised. Having a G.C.S.E. in Music , apart from showing a natural talent, translates as someone who communicates well, who can perform on his own, as well as in a group, someone who is creative, and responsive to those around him – many very sought after qualities.
How Do I Study?
This is a great G.C.S.E. to study, for one thing, it is very different to your other subjects – during class, you will perform on the instrument of your choice, spend a lot of time listening to all styles of music, and you will be using the computer to help create your own compositions.
Course Content
There are three components to this G.C.S.E.
Performance 35% You are required to perform a solo piece, and one in an ensemble.
Composition 40% You will compose two compositions.
Listening 25% You will have to listen to familiar and unfamiliar music, and respond to it in written form.
Music Career Options
Teaching is the most popular career, both Secondary, and Primary. For Secondary, you specialise and train for music teaching, whereas for primary, you will have a general teaching qualification, with music as an extra that you can offer.
On the technical side of things – there is recording, and studio sound work. An Armed Forces musical career is also an option.
