Pupils learn French in Year 8 and in Year 9 most pupils will have the option to take up German or Spanish as a second language.
In Year 11 pupils can decide to continue the language of their choice for GCSE and in fact may choose to do two languages.
All three languages are offered for study at AS or Advanced level.
The language text books are modern and interesting. The pupils will enjoy using their foreign language for listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We use tapes, cds, videos, dvds, computer programmes to stimulate interest in the learning of languages. Project work in the ICT room creates a high level of motivation and satisfaction.
We like to encourage interest in speaking a foreign language by organising opportunities for contact with young people abroad.
At present we have strong links with La Roche sur Yon, Coleraine’s twin town in France.
In Years 13 and 14 we have established an exchange with the Lycée Kastler and this gives our A level pupils a great opportunity to improve their language skills and appreciate French life and culture.
For Years 8 to 12 we organise an annual school trip to France, Spain or Germany to stimulate interest in speaking a foreign language and to experience life in a foreign country. Last year the destination was Barcelona in Spain and this year we plan to go to France.
Where are you from?
I come from Quebec City, which is located in the province of Quebec, in Canada. (www.bonjourquebec.com) We are about 7.5 millions of Quebekers, of which around 85% share the French language as a mother tongue. The “quebeker language” is slightly different than the common French that is spoken in France, and I believe my accent is the most exotic, as well as for pupils and teachers
D’où viens-tu?
Je viens de la ville de Québec, dans la province de Québec, au Canada.(www.bonjourquebec.com) Nous sommes 7.5 millions d’habitants dans la province, dont environ 85% ont comme moi, le français comme langue maternelle. Le “québécois” est légèrement différent du français courant qui est parlé en France, mais je crois que c’est surtout mon accent qui est exotique, autant pour les étudiants que pour les professeurs!
Why did you decide to become a language assistant?
I wanted to spend a year abroad for a long time; not only being a tourist, but to really settle in somewhere. The program of Modern Languages Assistant seemed ideal to me, to live in an English-speaking area and also to communicate my particular culture.
Pourquoi as-tu décidé de devenir assistante de français langue seconde?
Je voulais depuis longtemps vivre l’expérience de passer une année à l’étranger; pas seulement voyager comme touriste, mais bien m’implanter dans un endroit précis pour une année. Le programme d’assistants de langues étrangères m’a paru idéal, non seulement pour habiter dans une région anglophone mais aussi pour communiquer ma culture.
What does your job entail?
I meet the pupils (mainly A-levels) in small groups to help them improve their oral skills in French. Usually we talk about the topics they have to go through during the term.
Qu’est-ce que tu fais exactement comme travail?
Je rencontre les étudiants (principalement les A-levels) en groupes réduits pour pratiquer leur français oral. Habituellement nous conversons des sujets qui sont à l’étude pour les examens.
What training does it require to be a language assistant?
In Quebec, you had to be a student and to have a good level of English. Those who had studied some pedagogics were preferred, so I was pretty lucky to get the job! Actually I didn’t have any formation in pedagogics before coming here!
Quelles qualifications sont requises pour devenir assistant?
À Québec, il fallait être étudiant et avoir atteint un certain niveau en anglais : on donnait la préférence à ceux qui avaient étudié la pédagogie, alors j’ai été très chanceuse! En effet, mon curriculum était assez pauvre en expériences pédagogiques…mais plus maintenant!
What are your lasting impressions of CAI and living in this area for the last year?
I must admit that the idea of working in a boys-only school first made me a little uncomfortable… Fortunately my mind quickly changed when I discovered how nice the boys were! All of them have been very kind to me, especially during the first days when I needed some help to orientate myself in the school… All staff members welcomed me warmly; it’s always a pleasure to work with smily and joyful people! Northern Ireland in general is a great discovery for me, since I knew very little about it before coming. Being a Canadian, the weather hasn’t impressed me yet! I really enjoy the area, which is culturally very different for me… I still discover new things every day!
Quelles sont tes impressions de Inst et de la région, après y avoir vécu pendant une année?
Je dois avouer qu’au début l’idée d’aller travailler dans une école pour garçons me mettait un peu mal à l’aise… Heureusement, mon malaise a vite passé quand j’ai découvert à quel point les garçons de Inst sont charmants! Tous ont été très gentils avec moi, spécialement les premiers jours où j’avais besoin d’un peu d’aide pour me retrouver dans l’école… Tous les membres du personnel m’ont aussi chaleureusement accueillie, c’est toujours un plaisir de travailler en collaboration avec des gens ouverts et souriants. L’Irlande du Nord en général est une découverte heureuse pour moi qui ignorait pratiquement tout de ce petit coin de pays! Étant Canadienne, ce n’est pas le temps ici qui m’a découragée! J’aime beaucoup la région, qui est culturellement très différente pour moi… Je fais encore des découvertes tous les jours!
